How It Works

Image Format Conversion

Format conversion works by decoding the source image into raw pixel data using the browser's native image decoder, then re-encoding those pixels into the target format using the HTML5 Canvas API's toBlob() method. Different formats use different compression algorithms — JPEG uses lossy DCT-based compression, PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression, and WebP supports both modes with more modern algorithms.

PNG (Lossless)

Supports transparency and sharp edges. Best for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with text. Larger file sizes than JPEG/WebP for photos.

JPEG (Lossy)

No transparency support. Best for photographs and complex images. Adjustable quality allows balancing file size and visual quality. Smallest files for photos.

WebP (Modern)

Supports both lossy and lossless compression with transparency. Typically 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. Best for modern web applications.

FAQ

Will converting PNG to JPEG lose transparency?

Yes. JPEG does not support transparency. When converting from PNG with transparency to JPEG, transparent areas will be replaced with a white background. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to WebP or keep the PNG format instead.

Does converting from JPEG to PNG improve quality?

No. Converting from JPEG (lossy) to PNG (lossless) will not recover lost image data. The file size will increase significantly, but the visual quality remains the same as the original JPEG. PNG conversion is useful when you need to edit the image further without additional lossy compression.

Is WebP supported in all browsers?

WebP is supported in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari (14+), and Edge. For older browsers, JPEG or PNG remains the safer choice. WebP is recommended for modern web projects where browser compatibility is not a concern.

Why can't I set quality for PNG conversion?

PNG uses lossless compression by design, so there is no quality parameter to adjust. The quality slider is available for JPEG and WebP, which both use lossy encoding where quality directly affects file size.
