How It Works

Color Model Overview

Different color models describe colors from different perspectives. RGB is based on additive light mixing, HSL/HSV on human perception of color, and CMYK on subtractive ink mixing. This tool uses the colord library for precise mathematical conversions.

Format Descriptions

HEX

Hexadecimal notation converting each RGB channel to a two-digit hex value (00-FF), forming the #RRGGBB format. The most common color format in web development.

RGB

Red, Green, Blue additive light model with each channel ranging 0-255. Used for display devices. Written as rgb(R, G, B) in CSS.

HSL

Hue, Saturation, Lightness model. H ranges 0-360°, S and L range 0-100%. More intuitive for human color perception. Natively supported in CSS.

HSV/CMYK

HSV is similar to HSL but uses Value instead of Lightness — better suited for graphics software color pickers. CMYK is a print color model; conversions here are approximate for reference.

FAQ

Why is CMYK conversion approximate?

CMYK is based on subtractive ink mixing, and its color gamut fundamentally differs from RGB. Screen displays use the RGB gamut, while CMYK has a smaller gamut — the two cannot be mapped one-to-one. The CMYK values here are for screen reference only; for actual printing, use a professional color management system.

What is the difference between HSL and HSV?

In HSL, Lightness varies linearly from black to white (L=50% is pure color), while in HSV, Value varies linearly from black to pure color (V=100% is pure color). HSL is better suited for CSS layouts, while HSV is more common in graphics editor color pickers. They produce identical results for saturated colors but differ noticeably in low-saturation areas.

Why do converted RGB values contain decimals?

Converting from HSL/HSV to RGB may produce decimal values, but the RGB standard uses integers 0-255. This tool automatically rounds to integers, ensuring output values can be used directly in CSS.

Does it support colors with alpha (transparency)?

The current version only supports opaque color conversion. For transparency, you can manually append an alpha value to HEX (e.g., #8b5cf680) or use the rgba() function in CSS.
